What does SEO mean?

SEO Stands for Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, refers to the set of tasks that an individual or organization would take to encourage Google and other search engines to better position their site on SERPs for particular search queries. There are specific tactics that take place in order to better support better rankings based on general consensus among SEO’s (as a noun refers to the person that handles SEO, however, major search engines closely guard the specifics around rankings. 

Types of SEO

SEO can be sectioned into many different categories. The primary way of looking at the types of SEO is based off of the function of optimization, which would be On-Site SEO and Off-Site SEO. On-Site SEO refers to all of the optimization functions that happen within the actual website you are optimizing for, which may include:

  • Structured Markup Optimization (Meta/Schema)
  • Heading Tag Optimization
  • Content Creation & Organization

When looking at Off-Site SEO, this refers to all of the items that would happen off of the particular website, but direct traffic and SEO influence back to the site. These functions predominantly include:

  • Backlink Creation
  • Local Citation/Directory Building
  • Review Generation
